Can biometric data guide music selection for flow states?
Thesis
Music affects cognitive performance, but the relationship is personal and context-dependent. What if a music player could use real-time biometric data — heart rate, HRV, skin conductance — to build tempo progressions that guide listeners into flow states?
Research Methodology
Prototype built in Flutter with Riverpod state management. Integration with wearable APIs (Garmin, Apple Watch, Oura Ring) via Terra SDK. Testing tempo progression algorithms against HRV baselines across different activity types (deep work, exercise, creative tasks).
Findings
The correlation between HRV trends and subjective flow-state reports is promising but noisy. Individual calibration matters more than universal algorithms. The "Explore Mode" (free discovery without biometrics) turned out to be more engaging than the "Optimize Mode" in early testing — users want to feel guided, not controlled.
Status
Prototype built. Evaluating whether the biometric signal is strong enough to justify the hardware dependency. Considering a simpler approach based on self-reported energy levels instead of wearables.
